CAN supports Immigration Justice Legislation in Maryland

The Congregation Action Network clusters in Maryland (Montgomery and Prince Georges Counties) has joined local partners in supporting proposed immigration justice legislation in the current session of the Maryland General Assembly.

CAN is supporting four bills this session:

The Trust Act will prohibit corrections officers from detaining people beyond their release date, unless presented with a valid judicial warrant, and also prohibit police from inquiring about immigration status during stops. Read CAN's written testimony in support of the Trust Act here. If you are a Maryland resident, take action now to let your state legislators know you support this bill.

The Dignity not Detention Act would end state and local agency involvement in the cruel, immoral and counterproductive incarceration of immigrants and require transparency in any zoning or permitting decisions taken by local jurisdictions that enable private facilities that intend to incarcerate immigrants within Maryland. Read CAN's written testimony in support of the Dignity not Detention Act here. If you are a Maryland resident, take action now to let your state legislators know you support this bill.

The Data Privacy bill would prohibit MVA, as well as state and local law enforcement agencies, from sharing personal data with federal agencies for civil immigration enforcement, and for criminal immigration enforcement without a judicial warrant. It would also require public reporting of all such requests. Read CAN's written testimony in support of the Data Privacy bill here. If you are a Maryland resident, take action now to let your state legislators know you support this bill.

The Universal Representation bill would require the Attorney General to coordinate legal representation for Maryland residents facing detention or deportation in immigration court. Read CAN's written testimony in support of the Universal Representation bill here. If you are a Maryland resident, take action now to let your state legislators know you support this bill.

More information on these bills can be found at the site of our partners at the Unitarian Universalist Legislative Ministry of Maryland page: Immigration and the 2021 Session
